In 1990, Yamaha made a bold move and opened a custom shop and design studio in California on Weddington Street, North Hollywood. Together, Rich Lasner – Senior Guitar Designer, Leo Knapp – Master Luthier and Ken Dapron formed Yamaha Guitar Development and working with Jackie Minakuchi – Yamaha Japan, set the course that would confirm Yamaha’s position as a pre-eminent designer and manufacturer of electric guitars and basses.
One of the first projects to emerge was Billy Sheehan’s signature model, the Attitude bass, developed out of an already years-long relationship with the artist. The new U.S. team also designed two new series of electric guitars, with names inspired by their Southern California roots: Weddington and Pacifica.
Taking the best attributes of one of the world’s most popular electric guitars and combining it with modern thinking and input from professional guitarists gave rise to the Pacifica, arguably the most innovative interpretation of the double offset cutaway electric guitar of the new millennium.
Inspired by those original custom shop guitars and that original vision, the 600 series embodies the spirit of the Pacifica concept.
