The D whistle is one of the World’s most popular musical instruments. Also known as the Tin Whistle, Penny Whistle, Feadóg stáin, English Flageolet, Scottish Penny Whistle, Flageolet, Irish whistle, it is a simple, six-holed woodwind instrument.
Typically associated with Celtic Music, the D Whistle is a Fipple Flute, putting it in the same category as the Recorder, Native American Flute, and other similar Woodwind instruments.
A tin whistle player is traditionally called a tin whistler or simply a whistler, our experience is that you can call them anything you like…just don’t call them late for dinner!
The whistle is a diatonic instrument with simple fingering and is very easy to learn and play. Designed for Irish folk music, especially tin whistle music.
Why is the D whistle so popular? Well, as well as Traditional Celtic music, the D whistle is used in many other types of music.
It is not unusual to hear the D whistle used in praise music and film soundtracks, and published scores suitable for tin whistle performance are available in both genres. The tin whistle also appears in “crossover” genres like world music, folk rock, folk metal, and folk punk.
This tuneable whistle – in High D, was made in Germany by Meinl. Crafted from European Maple, it comes complete with a carry pouch and cleaning swab.
