George L. Stone was the teacher of hundreds of students including some of the greatest Jazz drummers including Tom Morello.

George L. Stone carved a reputation for himself as a Tutor of some renown. He was known to start each lesson with some rudiment study. Being a firm believer in knowing the basics, he would have the student open and close one of the standard 26 rudiments for up to thirty minutes. He also three different stick heights. These heights being 2 , 9 and 18 off the drum head. After this he would have the student play one of the rudiments using these different stick heights for various strokes of the rudiment. His method has launched the careers of thousands of drummers the World over

Also, Stone found that many drummers had difficulty in controlling secondary strokes (those found in rolls, diddles, triplets, etc.). He believed that this flaw was a direct result of an unnatural preliminary upswing. He helped correct this problem by developing a system to allow a more natural flow of arms and wrist action and by using different stick heights.
