Here at southcoastmusic we are proud to be able to represent Maton on the NSW South Coast. Even more heartfelt is the privilege to be able to offer you Maton’s magnificent Custom Shop instruments. Each one is hand made by Andy Allen who, without a doubt, is one of the most incredible guitar makers in the world today. Our relationship with this iconic brand stretches back to 1974 when our owner bought his first (of many) Maton and southcoastmusic has been selling them since 1985.
This is the W A May 808 Traditional – a guitar that grew from a concept hatched in the office of David Steedman – Maton’s Director, many years ago. Developed and designed as tribute to the late Maton founder – Bill May, many of the ideas and concepts that were close to his heart are evident in this beautiful Custom Shop model.
The 000 or “Traditional” shape is one of Maton’s most popular and forms the basis for what is a reliable, versatile and wonderfully comfortable instrument.
Bill May’s signature three layered Art-Deco style headstock is a work of art in its own right and features as proudly as it did on the very first Maton guitar that Bill made – which is still in the Maton Museum 70 years on.
The W A May Features the highest quality AAA Solid Sitka Spruce Top with superbly figured Fiddleback Blackwood back and sides. This stunning and so often favoured combination of tone woods is truly symbolic of Maton’s Australian heritage.
The body depth on the WA May Traditional is the same as that of the 808 models. Maton build the 808 with a body that is slightly deeper than the standard 000 size and as such creates a deeper voice with plenty of bottom end and all sonic ranges on show.
The W A May Custom Shop 808 also includes the Maton AP5 Pro Pickup system.
The AP5 Pro features Separate Microphone and Piezo input controls allow for blending of both microphone and piezo levels prior to sending the actively combined signals through to the tone circuits and master volume.
The highly selective cardioid microphone system allows for much greater microphone level before feedback in live environments. This newly upgraded microphone is direct mounted to the preamp casing via an adjustable arm, which permits easy final tweaking of the microphone position to suit your individual style.
