Born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland, in 1948, Rory Gallagher is one of the most influential guitarists of all time. Many guitarists, including Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Brian May and Eric Clapton, to name but a few, have cited Rory Gallagher as an influence on their playing.
Rory Gallagher’s musical aptitude became apparent at an early age when he taught himself how to play the ukulele. At the age of nine, his parents bought Rory his first guitar. Encouraged by his performances at local functions, Rory went on to win a cash prize in a talent contest when he was twelve. He use his winnings to buy a new guitar and only three years later, in 1963, he purchased his prized 1961 Fender Stratocaster for £100. This guitar became his primary instrument and trademark that was most associated with him during his career.
Rory Gallagher sold more than 30 million albums worldwide but it was his incendiary live performances that won him greatest acclaim before his untimely death in 1995.
