Get out those Thin Lizzy and Who Albums and immerse yourself to the look, feel, and sound of a classic Les Paul at a great price…say hello to the Gibson Les Paul Studio ’70s Tribute solidbody electric guitar.
Gibson has taken a few different approaches to mini humbuckers over the years, none more celebrated than in the Les Paul Deluxe. The Les Paul Deluxe was initially introduced in late 1968 and spported a pair of mini humbuckers, which were also colloquially known as New York humbuckers. They were left over from Gibson’s aquisition of Epiphone back in 1957. At the time of aquisition, Epiphone was a New York based company, hence the term “New Yorkers”.
The Gibson Les Paul Deluxe was the model which helped Gibson standardise production of their US-built guitars and remained in production until 1985.
Gibson’s mini humbuckers were very similar to Seth Lover’s Humbucking pickup but had more top end with lots of detail and punch which made them ideal for the 70s hard rock and southern rock that would immediately follow their introduction. Jazz fusion styles are also well suited to the mini humbucker, where it maintains great articulation and just enough of a harmonic kick to emphasize the overtones in lead lines and complex jazz chords. Noted Deluxe players included Pete Townshend of the Who, Thin Lizzy’s Scott Gorham and Aussie Guitarist Steve Garde who used his Gold Top Deluxe to great effect in the late 1970’s and 1980’s.

It’s got the smokey, burly tone that has made the Les Paul one of the most-played guitars in the world with the additional bite that only a mini humbucker can deliver. Gibson have wound these pickups with a wider frequency range and hotter output than previous generations and the Mahogany body and carved Maple Top provides the foundation for that iconic Les Paul richness and sustain. This is a smokin’ guitar that will put any amplifier in its place.
If you missed out on the initial excitement that followed the release of this guitar, you still have a chance to be a part of it and maybe write your own chapter in the history of Rock’n Roll. But…you’ve only got one chance – so, use it or lose it!
