“Here is the ultimate in a solid body guitar … The Incomparable Les Paul Custom Guitar,” — Gibson catalog, circa mid-1950s
“For over 20 years Gibson Custom has proudly been the torchbearer of, not only Gibson’s legacy, but also American craftsmanship and the value of human ingenuity. We believe today, as we did 20 years ago, that there remains a place in this world for the best of the best and that there is a value in what we do that extends far beyond the glossy sheen and gratifying weight of a finely crafted Les Paul.
We take great pride in knowing that we bring the most discerning players and collectors in the World the most refined collection of Historic Reissue, Archtop and Custom guitars we have ever had the pleasure to craft. Through milestone achievements that reflect decades of a passionate commitment by Gibson Custom’s craftspeople, engineers, players and collectors from around the globe, today’s Gibson Custom proudly reflects Gibson’s century long-plus position as the World’s Finest Guitar maker.” Henry Juszkiewicz, CEO Gibson Guitars
Quality never goes out of style and the Gibson Les Paul Custom is living testimony to that fact. For many, the Gibson Les Paul Custom is the stuff that dreams are made of. For those that dare to dream, this is the Holy Grail of solid body electric guitars. If the Les Paul Standard is the Rock’n Roll Outlaw then the Custom is the Black Tie and Tuxedo. Gibson has such reverance for their Les Paul Custom, it is actually produced by some of their most experienced and highly skilled Luthiers in the Gibson Custom Shop in Memphis.
This Les Paul Custom has its roots firmly planted in the iconic model from the mid-1950s . . . with the addition of several significant and thoroughly modern appointments.
The body is still crafted from a solid piece of Mahogany however, the Custom now features a hand-carved Maple Top with strategically routed holes. Time has shown that the lighter weight along with the Maple/Mahogany combination results in a guitar with enhanced acoustic qualities, improved resonance and serious sustain. The 24 ¾” scale length neck is also crafted from a solid piece of Mahogany then topped by a 22-fret Richlite® fingerboard outfitted with Pearl block inlays and Gibson’s traditional rounded profile.
The neck pickup is the Gibson’s 490R, based on the original PAF with its Alnico II magnet and chosen for its vintage tonal characteristicTs. The bridge pickup however, is the 498T. The 498T uses an Alnico V magnet with its emphasis on mids and high frequencies. This slightly “hotter” pickup is packed full of harmonically rich goodness and offers incredible tonal variation just with the sweep of the volume knob . . . we love it!
As expected, Gibson’s legendary Nashville Tune-o-matic Bridge and Stopbar Tailpiece are on hand along with Metal Tulip Tuners, multi-ply white and black binding on both the top and back, Gold hardware and a 1 11/16” nut width. Also included are a Gibson Custom case and certificate of authenticity.
The Les Paul Custom is a superb guitar but still, the addition of our PRO-SCM setup ensures that it is the guitar of your dreams.
By the way, did we mention that this is a Lefty?
