The answer is your guitar amp sounds very different when its not pointed directly at you. All ‘coaxial’ speaker suffer this problem, if not combined with a tweeter. The harsh, “ice-pick” type sounds emitted from the center of the speaker, contribute to the reason why most sound engineers will mic a guitar cab ‘off-axis’.
