Epiphone’s history with legendary guitarist and innovator Les Paul dates back to the early 1940s when Les, working nights at the original Epiphone factory on 14th Street in New York City, fashioned what may well have been the first solidbody guitar. In his quest for an electric guitar that would “sustain for days”, Les took a length of 4″ x 4″ timber which he had fashioned into a working neck, headstock and mount for his pickups. He then sawed an Epiphone hollowbody in half and attached the two halves to either side of the “Log” – probably for aesthetic purposes – but the result was inspiring.
Les continued to develop the idea through a series of prototypes, ultimately resulting in the classic solidbody guitar that has become a beacon of excitement and inspiration for countless guitarists. Over the next 15 years, Les continued to develop his dream machine and in 1957, in the historic Gibson and Epiphone factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the “sunburst” Les Paul Standard and its new pickup, the “PAF” humbucker was born.

The Les Paul Standard Plustop PRO with its ProBucker™ “PAF”-style pickups, coil-splitting and a beautiful AAA flame Maple veneer top delivered a guitar with a vintage looks and the modern appointments that players expect from a top flight guitar.
The ProBuckers on the Les Paul Standard Plustop Pro are built with Alnico II magnets – the same as the sought-after vintage PAF humbuckers. These are great pickups and they deliver the rich, warm tones with crystalline highs and tight bottom end that have inspired millions of hit songs.
There is a ProBucker-2 in the neck position and a slightly overwound ProBucker-3 in the bridge position. Add coil tapping controlled by push-pull volume pots and you have an infinite variety of sounds from single-coil spank to full humbucker shred.
This model is now discontinued however, we have this example – brand new, unplayed and Left Hand! It also includes our Pro-SCM setup.
