The Danelectro Electric Baby Sitar is one of the coolest stringed instruments ever made.
In the late 1960s the Indian Sitar began to find its way into western music. Despite the attraction of this new jangly sound, the Indian Sitar proved be a difficult instrument to learn and a nightmare to tune and setup.
In 1967, Danelectro released the Coral Electric Sitar model with a standard guitar fretboard, tuning and familiar fret arrangement. The Baby Sitar followed in 1968 and their place in musical history was sealed.
These amazing instruments may be heard on scores of best selling hit recordings and are still used to this day. Finding a well cared for and properly functioning original today is difficult and pricey.
The good news is that Danelectro have reissued the iconic Baby Electric Sitar and it’s available from southcoastmusic.
The Danelectro Baby Sitar features a familiar six-string configuration, 24.75″ 21-fret Maple neck and is tuned like a standard guitar. You’ll be able to use your playing skills without needing a steep learning curve.
This Dano Baby Sitar is finished in ‘Red Crackle’ – just like the original with a single lipstick single-coil in the bridge position. The ornate white pickguard sports volume and tone controls.
The secret to the Dano’s Sitar tone is the Goto ‘buzz’ bridge, which lightly mutes the string to mimic the attack and buzz of a sitar string. Each string has its own adjustable scalloped groove, allowing you to determine how strong the effect is.
Other appointments include smooth-geared, chrome machine heads, a precision-cut aluminium nut and a high-gloss-finished neck, topped with a 21-fret rosewood fingerboard. Featuring a Gotoh Sitar bridge and a single-coil lipstick pickup, the Baby Sitar delivers the exotic sitar sound in an electric instrument that’s ready to record and perform with.
This new Dano reissue faithfully replicates the sound and feel of the original and is ready to inspire you along with a new generation of players, songwriters and composers.
Whether you only use it for one song, or as the basis for an entire project, you definitely need to check out the Danelectro Baby Sitar. Hard to get, we have waited three years for these to arrive – don’t miss out!
