AKG have been not only been building microphones for more than eighty years, theye are also responsible for some important innovations. One is the Laminated Varimotion Diaphragm used in the D5.
The heart of any microphone is the diaphragm. This is the component that handles the task of turning mechanical motion into the electrical signal that delivers the sound. Varimotion from AKG is a unique, patented technology that utilises a diaphragm whose thickness varies along its diameter. With the help of this innovative diaphragm, AKG is able to precisely tune the capsule for the highest level of performance to provide powerful, accurate, clear and feedback-free sound.
The principle behind this technology is a dynamic membrane characterised by the lamination of a two-layer material, one lightweight and the other dense. The thin outer edges allow for extended low-frequency response while the thicker center of the membrane provides high SPL handling. The diaphragm allows the response of the transducer to be accurately tweaked in its molding process. The transducer is shipped with a high-output rare earth Neodymium (NdFeBr) magnet for lower noise and wider dynamic range.
The new Laminated Varimotion diaphragm deep-drawing process allows the diaphragm itself to be fine-tuned with no extra tuning resonators, leading to a quantum leap in audio performance. This is a killer feature in environments where feedback is an issue. With their Varimotion technology, AKG have been able to create a microphone that delivers incredibly accurate reproduction of the source sound, be it vocal or instrument and whether on stage or in the studio.
